All marks of the lightning are fitted with an escape aid in the event of an emergency occurring. This comprises a Type BS4C Ejection Seat. The F53 was fitted with the Mk 2 variant. The seat assembly comprises all required in order for egress, including a survival pack and dingy pack in the base of the seat assembly. The seat also comprises emergency oxygen supply and parachute assembly.
The ejection seat has a ground level ejection capability provided that the flight path is parallel to the ground and that the speed is at least 90 kts. If the aircraft is descending, the minimum safe altitude for ejection is greatly increased, in the event of a spin, if the aircraft has not been recovered by 10,000ft the pilot must eject. The pictures below show all components included within the seat assembly.
